Choosing a custom pharmacy website vs Wix or Squarespace is one of the first big calls a pharmacy owner makes online. Do you grab a template for a few dollars a month, or invest in a custom build? Both can produce a site that looks fine. The difference shows up later, in what the site can actually do for your pharmacy.

This guide compares a custom pharmacy website vs Wix and Squarespace on the things that matter:

• Cost over three years, not just the year-one subscription
• Local SEO control and map-pack ranking
• Page speed and mobile performance
• Refill, transfer, and patient-tool integrations
• Conversion tracking that ties traffic to filled scripts

No sales pitch for either side. Just where each one fits, and where it doesn't.

Custom pharmacy website vs. Wix or Squarespace: which should you choose?

A custom pharmacy website vs Wix or Squarespace comes down to what you need the site to do. Builders work for a simple brochure site that lists hours and services. A custom build wins when you need refill and transfer integrations, real local SEO control, and conversion tracking that ties traffic to filled scripts.

Here's the short version. If your pharmacy is brand new, has no patient-facing tools to connect, and needs a presence online this week, a builder is a reasonable start. If you plan to compete for "pharmacy near me," accept prescription transfers online, and measure what your marketing earns, a builder will hold you back within a year. This guide is part of our pharmacy website tips guide, which covers the full picture of pages, speed, and conversions.

What do Wix and Squarespace actually do well?

Wix and Squarespace do three things well: they're cheap to start, fast to launch, and require no developer. For a one-page brochure site, they're often enough. You pick a template, drop in your hours and address, and you're live in a weekend.

The low upfront cost is real. A builder subscription runs a fraction of a custom build in year one, which matters when cash is tight. Templates also look professional out of the box, so you avoid the dated-clip-art look that sinks trust. And the drag-and-drop editor means you can change your holiday hours without emailing anyone.

For a new pharmacy testing the waters, that's a fair place to begin. No shame in it. The trouble starts when the pharmacy grows and the site can't grow with it.

One more point in the builders' favor: they force you to keep things simple. A template won't let you bury your phone number or hours under clutter, which is a common mistake on poorly planned custom sites. If you do go the builder route, our guide to the essential pharmacy website pages shows the handful of pages every pharmacy site needs, builder or not. Get those right and a simple site can still serve patients well in the short term.

Where do website builders fall short for pharmacies?

Builders fall short on the parts that make a pharmacy website earn its keep: deep integrations, technical SEO control, speed, and conversion tracking. A pharmacy isn't a brochure. It's a business with refills, transfers, and patients who need to reach you fast.

Start with integrations. Connecting a refill app, an online transfer form, or two-way texting to a template builder ranges from clumsy to impossible. Many pharmacy tools simply don't have a Wix or Squarespace plugin, so you end up linking out to a separate portal that breaks the patient's flow. Every extra click between a patient and a refill is a chance to lose them, and builders add more of those clicks than a purpose-built site does.

Then there's speed. Template builders load a lot of code you never use, and that drags performance down. HubSpot reports that web pages load 70.9% slower on mobile than on desktop, and bloated templates make that worse. Slow pages quietly lose conversions before tracking ever fires, which is why Core Web Vitals have become a ranking and conversion factor you can't ignore.

Conversion tracking is the last gap. Setting up reliable call tracking, form-submit events, and clean analytics on a builder is harder than it should be, and that's the difference between guessing and knowing. Our guide to pharmacy website conversion tracking walks through what a properly instrumented site captures.

How does each option affect your local SEO?

Local SEO is where the gap widens most. Custom builds give you full control over technical SEO, page speed, and structured data. Builders limit how much you can adjust, and for a pharmacy fighting for the map pack, those limits cost real visibility.

Google now ranks every site on its mobile version first, and mobile is where your patients already are. Statista reports that mobile devices generated 62.54% of global website traffic in late 2024, so a slow or rigid mobile template hurts both rankings and the majority of your visitors directly. Builders handle the basics, but fine control over speed, schema, and page structure is where custom pulls ahead. When two pharmacies in the same town compete for the same searches, those technical edges often decide who lands in the map pack and who sits on page two.

The payoff for getting local SEO right is large. Semrush reports that businesses in Google's local 3-pack get 93% more calls, clicks, and direction requests than positions four through ten. And Backlinko reports that 76% of people who run a near-me search visit a related business within a day. Ranking decides whether those patients find you or the chain down the street.

You can do local SEO on a builder. You just have less room to compete when a rival pharmacy invests in a faster, better-structured custom site. For more on the foundation, see our pharmacy website features checklist.

What does each option really cost over three years?

Over three years, the cost gap narrows and often flips. A builder is cheaper in year one but caps what you can earn from the site. A custom build costs more upfront and pays back through conversions, integrations, and SEO that a template can't match.

Look past the monthly subscription. The true cost includes what you lose to slow pages, missed integrations, and weak SEO, none of which show up on an invoice. A site that can't accept transfers or rank locally leaves money on the table every month.

Think of it in terms of a single recovered patient. If a better-ranking, faster site brings in even a handful of new prescriptions a month that a builder would have missed, the custom build pays for itself well inside three years. The subscription you saved in year one rarely covers a single lost regular patient over the same period. That's the math owners miss when they compare only the sticker prices.

For a full breakdown of what a build actually runs, see our pharmacy website cost guide. The right question is what the site brings in, not what it costs you.

Which option is right for your pharmacy?

The right choice depends on your stage. A brand-new pharmacy with no integrations and a tight budget can start on a builder. A pharmacy that wants transfers, local ranking, and measurable marketing needs a custom build to compete.

Be honest about where you are. If you check more boxes below toward growth, a template will cap you sooner than you expect. If you're truly just getting a name online this month, a builder buys you time, and you can rebuild later.

The bottom line for independent pharmacies

The choice isn't really custom versus builder. It's whether you want a website that lists your hours or one that grows your pharmacy. Both have their place, but only one is built to accept transfers, rank locally, and prove what your marketing earns.

So match the tool to your ambition. If you're testing a single location with no integrations, start lean and revisit it later. If you're serious about competing with the chains, build for that from the start, because rebuilding twice costs more than building once. A site that can't do the job is the most expensive option of all.
